That Time We Got Married In The Snow

today is our 3 year wedding anniversary!

We often get asked about some of the images on our website and what they are all about. The picture on our homepage of snowboard boots? Thats us on our wedding day. That picture on our about us page of Mick in a suit and me in a dress on top of a mountain? Also our wedding day! So seeing as it is our wedding anniversary today, I thought I would post up some pics and share that oh so fun and special day with you.

the story

Mick proposed to me whilst we were snowboarding on a black run overlooking Lake Tahoe in California. Much to my surprise! After all, we had already been together for 11 years at that stage so it was totally unexpected. There was no question that we would have a winter wedding and that it would be in Queenstown, New Zealand. We thought long and hard about how to go about it. We also knew that a lot of our family and friends would have a hard time getting over to New Zealand and that many of them weren't fans of the cold. So, we decided to keep it true to what we love, with just the two of us and have a true snowboarding wedding!

Most years we go to Queenstown for a snowboarding trip, so we just combined it into one of those trips and invited everyone along for some fun in the snow.  Here's some pics from that special day.

showtime!

We were picked up by limo and helicoptered up to the top of The Remarkables.

We had the ceremony at the top of The Remarkables. We were lucky enough to have Al, an amazing celebrant and also friend take us through the formalities. A lot of our friends were a tad jealous that he got to be there!

It may not seem like it, but I am absolutely freezing in those photos! And slightly fearful of falling down the mountain as our photographer kept saying, "take one more step back". We then flew over to Coronet Peak where some of our friends were waiting at the top and then we snowboarded down the mountain (our version of the bridal waltz!). It totally felt like a rock star moment.

So cool to see these guys as we came in to land!

We then headed back to the apartment that we had rented to thaw out and celebrate with our friends and family that were in town. It was an epic day, full of laughs, fun and champagne! A special thanks to Sarah from Simply Weddings for helping us to coordinate it all! It was so stress free. We just told her our idea and she made it happen! It was such a memorable day. When I look back at that day, I realise that we couldn't have done it any other way. It was totally us. I'd do it all again in a heartbeat!

I'd love to hear your wedding stories. Tell me about them in the comments below! (Make sure you click on the 'subscribe via e-mail link to get notified of our reply).
